The service should have quality checking systems to manage risks and assure the health, welfare and safety of people who receive care (outcome 16)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Benefit from safe quality care, treatment and support, due to effective decision making and the management of risks to their health, welfare and safety.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 29 January 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with staff.

Our judgement

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people receive.

Reasons for our judgement

People were asked for their views about their treatment and the service offered by the dentist. People’s views were acted on as the dentist had systems in place to gain feedback from people and records demonstrated how the practice had incorporated and acted upon people’s comments. People were asked to complete a satisfaction survey. Records showed that the results of the surveys were evaluated and any issues were addressed.

As part of the dentists’ quality assurance system risk assessments were reviewed regularly as were the practices policies and procedures. A range of audits were carried out to ensure systems were working effectively within the practice. These included tests on equipment and the maintenance of the building along with assessments which impacted on the service people received such as ‘patient waiting times’ and record maintenance. Records showed systems were in place for high risk areas which used external contractors to check for compliance which included checks on water systems for Legionella.

As part of the practices quality assurance system any incidents were logged and discussed. Where action was needed to prevent an incident occurring again this had taken place and had been recorded. The practice had evaluated the improvements it had made in 2012 and had produced a plan for the year 2013. The service had comprehensive risk assessments which included specific roles and responsibilities for staff within the practice.

Discussions with a dentist and dental nurse showed that meetings had taken place and included the dentists and dental nurse and receptionist. Staff spoken with on the day of the inspection told us they found the meetings to be useful and felt they helped them maintain standards of care. This showed that procedures were in place to enable staff to discuss any developments in dentistry and provide staff with the opportunity to develop their professional knowledge and skills.
