Kindness, compassion and dignity
Staff treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. The provider treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.
People and those important to them spoke positively about the support people received and the kind and caring attitude of staff. Comments included, “The carers are very good and nice” and “I can’t praise the carers enough.”
Relatives told us staff were respectful in their interactions, and during the inspection, we observed staff speaking to people respectfully and promoting their dignity when providing support. One relative said, “They talk to [person] as a grown up and not as a child. They ask [person] what they would like.” Another relative said, “They give [person] time to answer questions and don’t hurry them. They will repeat if [person] needs it.”
Some relatives told us people were at times dressed in clothing which was not their own; however, they said they were able to raise this with staff and managers when necessary. Relatives told us people’s personal care and appearance generally met their individual preferences, and staff were respectful of people’s choices.
Treating people as individuals
The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care and support met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.
People and those important to them told us staff provided care which reflected their choices and preferences. Staff understood what was important to people and supported them accordingly. Comments included, “I think they [staff] know [person] very well as an individual” and “They [staff] know [person] and what they like and don’t like They have spent time to get to know [person].”
Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, support and wellbeing.
Staff encouraged people to make choices about their care, and we observed staff supporting people in a way which promoted their independence. One relative told us, “Meal choices are given, [person] selects what clothes they would like to wear and what colours match. It’s their choice. [Person] chooses when to get up and go to the lounge.”
Responding to people’s immediate needs
The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. We observed staff acting promptly to ensure people had the support they required.
People’s relatives told us staff were prompt when people asked for assistance. Comments included, “[Person] can use the call bell independently. It’s a very short time for staff to respond” and “[Person] can’t use the call bell. One or two staff are always nearby.”
Workforce wellbeing and enablement
The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff. Staff told us they felt valued and were supported by the management team at all times. Staff said they felt listened to and told us managers were open and approachable. Comments included, “I feel deeply supported. Management provides excellent emotional and professional support”, “They are approachable and easy to contact if needed” and “Managers are approachable and are always on call if needed.”
