  • Experience effective, safe and appropriate care, treatment and support that meets their needs and protects their rights.

How this check was done

Our judgement

Patients medical history was taken and regularly checked for any changes.

Dental needs were fully assessed and explained to patients.

Overall we found that Family Dental Practice was meeting this essential standard.

User experience

Patients told us that they were always asked about changes to their health and about their medications. Patients also said that their treatment plans were explained in a straight-forward manner.

Other evidence

Patients were provided with a medical history form when they first registered at the service. We saw that the receptionist asked current patients whether there were any changes to their health, and any changes were recorded on each patient card. The patient card was taken through to the dentist to check.

We were shown some examples of the records of the full dental assessments that were carried out for patients, along with treatment plans.

Dental care and health education materials were used to assist patients to understand their individual needs.

The practice produced very well organised documentation to evidence that equipment was checked and that risk assessments were in place, including risk assessments for COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).

The staff undertook regular audits, such as the audits for emergency medication and first aid equipment.
