The provider had systems to ensure that people who used the service received person-centred care and treatment, that was appropriate, met their needs and was reflective of their personal preferences. Preventive oral health care was encouraged.
Staff obtained patients’ consent for treatment in line with legislation and guidance and understood their responsibilities under the Mental Capacity Act 2005. Staff described how they involved patients’ relatives or carers when appropriate and made sure they had enough time to explain treatment options clearly.
Patients were referred to primary and secondary care specialists for treatment the practice did not provide. This included referring patients with suspected cancer under the national faster diagnosis pathways.
Staff felt the practice supported them to develop and enabled them to take on responsibilities.
Staff were kept up to date with current evidence-based practice and demonstrated the skills, knowledge, and experience required to carry out their roles. However, we identified that improvements should be made in relation to clinicians’ awareness of guidance issued by the British Society of Periodontology.
We reviewed a sample of patient care records and found that information was generally recorded in line with recognised guidance. We identified that improvements should be made to ensure record keeping fully complied with national guidance and that clinicians appropriately justify, grade, and report on radiographs taken.
The practice had systems in place to prescribe medicines in line with current guidance, and antimicrobial prescribing audits were being undertaken. However, our review of the most recent audit identified several areas that fell short of the required standards. We discussed this with the provider to consider bringing the next audit forward to support monitoring of improvements.
The provider responded promptly to this feedback by introducing information ‘crib’ sheets for staff use and staff had begun to complete refresher training, evidence of which was shared with us. To ensure continued improvement, these measures will need to be fully embedded into clinical practice and monitored on an ongoing basis.
