Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 18 and 20 March 2025. Dunwood Manor Nursing Home is a care home providing residential and nursing care to older people who may be living with dementia and people who have a physical disability. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement. The service can accommodate up to 55 people. When we inspected there were 40 people receiving a service, 4 of whom were in hospital.

The premises were arranged in 2 separate units, Beeches specialised in supporting people living with dementias, and Willows accommodated people who needed nursing care with health being their main need.

We inspected this service as a result of concerns received about practices in the home. We found no evidence of the alleged concerns during our inspection.

People were safe, cared for compassionately and competently and in line with best practice.

The premises and infection prevention and control practice needed to be improved. The premises were due, in the near future, to be refurbished and reconfigured to fit the providers ‘Household’ model of care.

We found there was not always a consistent approach to safeguarding or management of risks however when concerns were reported they were investigated thoroughly. Medicines had been safely managed.

Following a number of changes, there was a new management team consisting of a manager and clinical lead. Both were enthusiastic in their roles and keen to develop and improve the service.

Staff believed there was a positive culture within the service and that diversity was valued. When we assessed, 70 to 80% of staff were on sponsorship and from overseas. Staff had gone the extra mile to learn phrases in a person’s language to support their person-centred care.

Staff trained in a wide range of relevant areas and the provider learned from incidents that occurred in the service.

People's experience of this service

We received written feedback from 9 relatives and spoke with people during our assessment. Feedback was mainly positive, praising staff and the care delivery. Less positive feedback was received regarding the premises which a relative felt needed to be updated, and about malodours in the service.

Relatives believed people were safe and medicine were administered as prescribed.
There was a concern that management changes had happened, and people’s friends and relatives had not been informed. One relative did not know who the manager was and another expressed concerns that issues raised with the previous manager may have been lost in the transition to the new postholder.
