Planning for the future
People were not always supported to plan for important life changes, so they could have enough time to make informed decisions about their future, including at the end of their life.
Although people had care plans in place for the provision of end-of-life care, 5 of the 6 plans we looked at lacked detail and information about people’s preferences and choices. We fed this back to the management team who told us this was an area they were looking at.
Staff told us they had completed training on end-of-life care and felt confident to support people and their families during this period. A health professional told us they felt the team provided good end of life care. They told us, “There is a move to be more proactive speaking to relatives [about resuscitation decisions]. As a team we are all aware how quickly things can deteriorate and the importance of getting things in place early. We have an excellent palliative care nurse who has been actively involved with the staff. I would say the staff are good here with end-of-life care.”
