People and their relatives told us they were treated well. One person told us, “Staff are great, I get along with all of them.” And a relative told us, “[Staff] always care, they are like a big family, good staff interaction and a calming environment.” We observed staff to treat people with kindness and compassion throughout our inspection. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People’s care plans provided staff with detailed information on people’s life histories, preferences and relationships that were important to them. Staff were knowledgeable on how people liked to be cared for. We found arrangements were in place to ensure people could pursue their interests and beliefs. For example, people were supported to continue practicing their religion in accordance with their beliefs.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were supported to maintain their independence. We found that appropriate equipment and aids were in place to enable people to do this safely while promoting choice and control. One person told us, “Staff are very good as they know I need to keep my independence, they know not to do everything for me.” People also told us they were supported to maintain relationships with those important to them. They confirmed they were able to have visitors at any time, which helped them stay connected with family and friends.

People’s care plans provided staff with guidance on responding to people’s immediate needs in a safe and person-centred way. For example, where people presented with feelings of distress, they provided staff with strategies on how to support the person in a reassuring way.
