People should get safe and appropriate care that meets their needs and supports their rights (outcome 4)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Experience effective, safe and appropriate care, treatment and support that meets their needs and protects their rights.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 23 May 2013, talked with people who use the service and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights.

Reasons for our judgement

Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people’s safety and welfare.

All new patients were asked to complete a medical history form and the dentist told us he discussed any medical conditions or allergies with them before treatment. The dentist confirmed that he asked about health changes at subsequent appointments. People we spoke with confirmed that the dentist asked them about their health and medication at each visit, and we saw from patient notes that health questions were updated at each visit.

The dentist gave people after-care advice following treatment, and people could call the practice if they had concerns. The dentist monitored telephone calls out of hours and referred people to an alternative dental service if emergency treatment was needed.

There were arrangements in place to deal with foreseeable emergencies. The practice had a policy in place on handling emergencies and staff had been trained on emergency procedures including basic life support. There was suitable emergency equipment and emergency drugs. The dental nurse told us that she checked the log of expiry dates monthly to ensure everything was in date. and we saw evidence of this.
