Our view of the service

  • Date of assessment 28 July 2026. This assessment was risk based and prompted because the service had not been inspected since registration in May 2024.
  • SpaMedica Carlisle, is an independent healthcare provider, registered to provide treatment of disease, disorder or injury, surgical procedures, and diagnostic and screening procedures, for adults aged 18 to 65 and over. The service does not see and treat children and has no overnight beds.
  • The hospital is located within a 3-storey building and is operational Monday to Saturday 8:30am to 5:00pm.
  • Services include cataract surgery under local anaesthetic, yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) laser capsulotomy, age related macular degeneration treatment and vitreor-retinal procedures.
  • The service accepts NHS, and self-pay / insured patients referred by GPs and independent opticians. Patients can also self-refer privately for cataract surgery and YAG laser capsulotomy at the same location, under the provider’s Freedom Vision brand.
  • We visited clinical areas and spoke with consultants, nursing and support staff, managers, regional managers, reception staff and patients.
  • We looked at patient’s healthcare records, policies, procedures, and other documents related to the running of the service.
  • We rated the service as good.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with 2 patients in the service and observed patients in clinic and in theatre with their permission. Patients were positive about the staff treating them with warmth and kindness and providing effective care and treatment. Patients with protected characteristics felt supported. Patients confirmed their pain was well managed and they were supported to be independent as possible after their procedures. Patients said they all felt they could get assistance if needed. Patients told us they were given time to ask question about their procedure and staff had checked they understood what they were having done.
