Governance, management and sustainability
The practice had a governance system that included policies and procedures, which were accessible to staff and were reviewed on a regular basis.
Overall, systems and processes were in place and embedded; however, the inspection identified some areas for improvement in relation to the management of risk. These included fire safety, Legionella management, and the recording and sharing of learning following incidents and accidents.
Staff were aware of the importance of protecting patients’ personal information. Staff password protected patients’ electronic care records, and paper records were stored securely and complied with General Data Protection Regulations.
The practice had systems and processes for learning, quality assurance and continuous improvement. This included undertaking audits according to recognised guidance.
Concerns and complaints were responded to appropriately, and outcomes were discussed to share learning and for improvement.
Staff had clear responsibilities, and systems of accountability to support good governance.
Staff feedback was obtained through meetings, surveys, and informal discussions. Staff said they were encouraged to share suggestions for improvement and on the whole felt their views were listened to, where appropriate.
The practice had taken steps to improve environmental sustainability. For example, staff described the use of paperless systems and efforts to reduce energy consumption, such as switching off equipment when not in use.
There were effective processes for reporting incidents and accidents, and for receiving and acting on safety alerts. However, improvements should be made to ensure learning is consistently captured and shared.
