Emerald Place Clinic

We rated caring as good. We assessed five quality statements.   Young people were treated with kindness, care, and compassion. We observed respectful, appropriate therapeutic interactions between staff and young people. All staff spoken with were passionate and enthusiastic about providing safe, good quality care. Young people were involved in making decisions about their care and community meetings gave them an opportunity to feedback and make requests on how the service was run and what they would like to see. Staff made every effort to respond to these. Young people were encouraged to be as independent as possible, given choices and provided with support to take control of their anxieties and emotions. Staff responded anticipated and responded quickly to young people’s needs. Staff described how they felt supported from the service leaders and how they felt supported by colleagues. NHSE and the Provider Collaborative recognised that staff treated young people with kindness and compassion and wanted to deliver safe, good quality care.   However,   Emerald Place Clinic was situated a considerable distance from local towns with no access to public transport. The Elysium Healthcare service next door had a minibus that was used to support patients access to the community; it was also used to pick staff up and drop them off at nearby rail/bus services. However, there was not always enough drivers for the minibus to support young people at Emerald Place Clinic to access activities in the community and staff at the service did not have access to a mini bus to support their commute to and from work, like their colleagues did at the service next door.   Some processes put in place to manage risk meant staff took an overly restrictive approach to access to the garden meaning young people had little choice and control over when they went outside.
