People should be protected from abuse and staff should respect their human rights (outcome 7)

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are protected from abuse, or the risk of abuse, and their human rights are respected and upheld.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 15 October 2012, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People who use the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening.

Reasons for our judgement

We looked at a sample of six staff records and spoke with six members of staff. We noted that they were suitably qualified to carry out their duties as their professional certificates, enhanced criminal record bureau (CRB) checks and details of training undertaken were contained within the staff records.

We were shown the policies and procedures, which were contained in a file and had signatures of all staff attached to them, to indicate that they had read them. We spoke with six members of staff who all demonstrated an awareness of safeguarding issues, concerning both children and vulnerable adults, and were aware of the reporting procedures.

The staff members we spoke with also demonstrated an understanding of mental capacity issues which may relate to consent to treatment and cost within this setting.

We looked at a sample of six staff meeting minutes. We noted that reminders were given about adhering to policies and changes or updates were discussed with all staff. Minutes were made available to any staff member who could not attend a meeting.
