Our view of the service
Cygnet Hospital Clifton is a 25-bed specialist low secure rehabilitation and treatment hospital for adult men with personality disorder and complex mental health needs. Patients may also present with offending histories, self-harm risks and behaviours that challenge services.
The hospital provides a structured pathway through assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery. Ancaria Ward is a 12-bed admissions, assessment and treatment ward. Acorn Ward is a 13-bed rehabilitation ward focused on recovery, increasing independence and preparing patients for discharge into supported living or community settings. At the time of our assessment, all 25 beds were occupied, and all patients were detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.
Cygnet Hospital Clifton was registered with the Care Quality Commission in February 2011. The service is registered to provide the regulated activities of:
- Assessment or medical treatment for persons detained under the Mental Health Act 1983.
- Treatment of disease, disorder or injury.
At the time of the assessment, the service had a Controlled Drugs Accountable Officer in post. The service also had an Interim Registered Manager who had submitted an application to become the Registered Manager and was awaiting their registration interview with the Care Quality Commission.
This was an unannounced comprehensive assessment, which meant the provider was not informed in advance that the assessment would take place.
We assessed all 33 quality statements across the five key questions: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led. As all quality statements were assessed during this visit, the current rating reflects the findings from this comprehensive assessment.
The service was previously rated requires improvement, following a published inspection report in September 2021. This assessment found evidence of significant and sustained improvement. Following this assessment, we rated the service as good.
