This care home is run by two companies: Barchester Healthcare Homes Limited and Scarborough Hall Limited. These two companies have a dual registration and are jointly responsible for the services at the home.

Our view of the service

Silverbirch House Care Home is a service offering accommodation and personal care for up to 65 people. It is a purpose built service, set over 3 floors and provides care to people who may be living with dementia or who have long-term health conditions. At the time of our visit, there were 38 people living in the service.
The service was well managed by a competent manager and people were supported by well-trained staff. Although we found that the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 were not being consistently followed.
Staff supported people exceptionally well with person-centred, individualised care which helped to ensure that people achieved goals and aspirations.
Good medicines processes were followed and people received the medicines they had been prescribed.
The environment was well maintained, clean and hygienic and staff had recorded information to support people if they needed to evacuate the building.
Care plans were informative and relevant and contained sufficient information to support staff to provide appropriate care. Staff ensured people and their families were involved in care plans as well as the running of the service through meetings and surveys.
Staff had good relationships with external providers, both in the community as well as through health agencies. Staff worked with professionals to provide the care people required.
Staff were recruited through robust processes and management monitored staff performance through supervisions, appraisals and a review of call bell response times.
Lessons were learned from accidents and incidents and where safeguarding concerns arose, these were reported appropriately.
People's experience of this service
People were happy living at Silverbirch House Care Home. They told us staff were kind and caring and responded to their needs.
People’s wellbeing was improved by the responsive and proactive approach of the staff, and people’s wishes and hopes were recognised. People were involved in regular meetings and were invited to give their suggestions and ideas through an annual survey.
People said staff helped them to stay safe and if they needed staff support there was always someone around.
People felt they were treated as an individual and given the opportunity to retain their independence as well as make choices in their care. People were supported to express their wishes on how they would like their end-of-life care to look like.
People said they would have no hesitation in raising any complaints or concerns and both people and their relatives spoke highly of the service, staff and management.
