Our view of the service

We carried out an assessment of Minchenden Lodge on 12 March 2026. The service is a residential care home providing accommodation and personal care to older people, many of whom were living with dementia and complex health needs. At the time of the assessment, 22 people were living at the service. We found the service was providing good quality care that supported people’s safety, wellbeing and overall quality of life. People lived in a clean, well-maintained and dementia-friendly environment.

Communal areas and bedrooms were tidy, personalised and free from unpleasant odours. Infection prevention measures were followed, and staff were visible throughout the day providing reassurance and supervision. Environmental adaptations, including keypad-controlled access and clear signage, supported people to move around safely.

People and their relatives told us they felt reassured about the safety and care provided. They spoke positively about staffing levels, continuity of familiar staff and prompt communication when people’s needs changed. We observed warm and respectful interactions, with staff supporting people patiently during activities, transfers and mealtimes.

Staff monitored people’s health needs and worked with external professionals to support positive outcomes. Leadership promoted an open and supportive culture. Relatives described managers as approachable, we observed effective teamwork among staff, and people were supported to engage socially throughout the day.

Overall, systems, staff practice and leadership supported the delivery of safe, compassionate and responsive care.

People's experience of this service

People and relatives were consistently positive about the care provided and described staff as attentive, kind and responsive to people’s needs. One relative told us, “They always explain the medication to me and keep me informed,” while another said, “Whenever I visit, [my relative] is always in good shape.” Families spoke about feeling reassured by the level of supervision and the visible presence of staff supporting people in communal areas.

People were described as well cared for and supported to maintain their health and wellbeing. Relatives told us staff recognised changes in people’s needs and acted promptly, including seeking medical advice and monitoring aspects such as fluid intake where required. Some families reported noticeable improvements in people’s confidence or communication after moving into the home.

We observed people appearing comfortable and settled during the site visit. Staff spent time engaging people in conversation, encouraging participation in activities and providing reassurance where needed. Overall, our observations, along with feedback from relatives and people, indicated they were treated with dignity and supported in a calm, safe and respectful environment.
