People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 25 February 2013, observed how people were being cared for and talked with people who use the service. We talked with carers and / or family members and talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

Reasons for our judgement

Appropriate checks were undertaken before staff began work. We examined two staff files. We saw that all staff had criminal record checks. There was supporting documentation of their suitability such as an application, including work history, references, proof of professional registration and personal identification. The practice manager showed a good understanding of how to recruit staff and ensure that this was done safety. This included outside agency staff who would be required to verify that they were sufficiently qualified and skilled to carry out the regulated activity. This meant that there were effective recruitment and selection processes in place.
