Our view of the service

Elgar Court is a residential care service, providing personal care to younger and older adults with support needs and dementia.

An unannounced assessment took place to review the quality of care. At the time of the assessment the service supported 40 people, all people were in receipt of a regulated activity. This is the first assessment for Elgar Court Care Home.

At this assessment the overall rating for Elgar Court is good. This is based upon the findings at this assessment.

The home was beautifully presented and decorated in line with people’s preferences. It offered a warm, welcoming atmosphere to all visitors, and a positive culture was evident as soon as you entered. People living in the home were engaged and interacting with staff, with some choosing to spend time in the café area near reception.

Elgar Court provided exceptional care, treating people with kindness, compassion and dignity. The team embraced a person‑centred approach, ensuring people were at the heart of everything they did.

People told us they felt safe and happy living in the home. There was clear evidence that effective processes were in place to protect people from the risk of abuse. Individuals were treated with dignity, and they achieved excellent outcomes. The provider involved people and their families in shaping care, promoting choice and continuity. People were supported to express their goals, work towards them and enjoy meaningful, positive experiences.

People’s care plans were detailed and tailored to their individual needs. Their support needs were assessed appropriately, and staff delivered care in line with these plans. The provider worked with each person to plan and deliver their care and treatment, focusing on what mattered most to them.

Staff were recruited safely and received relevant training to perform their roles safely and to meet people’s needs. Staff were always supported by leaders to ensure they had the right skills to support people effectively. Staff evidenced good understanding of safeguarding processes and respected people’s choices and wishes.

Managers and staff upheld a shared vision embedded in dignity, respect, and person‑centred care, building trust and supporting people’s independence. Leadership was highly visible and actively involved in the day to day running of the home. Leaders created an environment where staff felt confident to contribute ideas that enhanced and innovated care. Managers and staff worked closely with the local community and embraced new ways of working, fostering a culture of continual learning and improvement to ensure people received high quality care, compassionate, and personalised support.

People's experience of this service

We gained feedback from 8 people living at the service and 4 relatives. People and their relatives were positive in their feedback about the home.

People told us they felt happy and safe within the home. One person told us, “I am very happy, the management is very good, all staff are polite and we always know what activities are planned for the day”. We also observed interactions between people and staff as part of the assessment. These observations evidenced positive interactions between people and staff. People were given choice, listened to and staff adapted their approach based on people’s needs.

Relatives feedback was positive. One relative told us, “Since my mother has been in the home, she has excelled and she is so well looked after and happy”.

People thoroughly enjoyed the activities on offer both in the home, and in the community. People embraced opportunities to access community services and build positive links with people in the community.

As a result of the support people received, they had experienced positive outcomes, and some people had been supported to live independently in the community.
