Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

This is the first assessment for this registered service. This key question has been rated good.This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Feedback we received from people and their relatives was positive and complimentary. Comments included,“The care workers are kind, very caring, and always show patience”,“They are wonderful and very caring. I don't know where I would be without them” and “They are all very kind to my mum.”

Professional feedback was equally complimentary. One health and social care professional told us, “Whenever I have had an allocation involving this care provider I have found [field manager] is always approachable…she is genuinely a caring person. I also generally receive compliments about care staff and feel that they are a really good care provider.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

Relatives and people we spoke with, told us staff respect their wishes, decisions and preferences. One relative said, “She feels that her care is good and personalised.”

Health and social care professionals similarly had complimentary comments including, “They provide person-centred support and are always attuned to the individual needs of clients within their homes” and “[Care coordinator] and her team consistently go above and beyond to ensure support packages are tailored to meet individuals' needs and can adapt care arrangements when circumstances change.”

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People’s careplans identified their level of independence and how staff could assist. This prompted and supported people to remain independent and to have choice and control over their care and how they wished to spend their day.

People and their relatives had been fully involved in the assessment process and subsequent development of the careplan.Staff told us they were clear about offering people choice and respecting their wishes and preferences.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Staff knew people well and were well versed in responding to their immediate needs and escalating concerns where required. Staff confidently described any emergency procedure to follow if necessary to get help.

We saw examples of where the service had acted quickly to provide support in a very short timeframe, as well as ensuring people had appropriate and timely care when they were discharged from hospital.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff told us they felt well equipped to carry out their support of people in a person-centred way. Induction, shadowing and training enabled staff to start work independently, confidently and competently. If staff requested additional training, they were enrolled onto the appropriate course.

Staff told us they received regular one to one supervision and an appraisal every 6 months. This gave staff the opportunity to discuss achievements, goals and professional development. Staff told us they felt well supported by their manager, who was approachable and listened. Staff also said the provider showed appreciation to all staff fairly by organising staff lunches and offering Christmas gifts. This helped staff to feel valued.
