Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 2 September to 30 September 2026. Coralyn House is a residential care home providing accommodation for up to 5 people with learning disabilities and/or autism, who require personal care. At the time of our inspection there were 4 people living at the service. This assessment was to follow up on the action taken following the identified breaches at the previous inspection.

We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. At this inspection we found the provider was meeting these principles.

The provider was introducing a revised governance system. Due to these changes we identified gaps in relation to monitoring, needs assessment and Mental Capacity Act assessments being in place. However, there was a quality assurance action plan to give oversight of work to be completed to ensure areas were not overlooked.

People were supported by a small staff team who had the skills and knowledge to provide effective support. Staff showed a good understanding of the people they supported and consistently promoted their dignity and respect, taking account of their personal needs, preferences and choices.

Staff demonstrated a clear understanding of the safeguarding procedures in place and expressed confidence that any concerns would be appropriately addressed by the management team. They felt supported and valued and worked well as a team.

A staff member told us, “Yes, it is a good place to work and we are like family. We support each other, communicate openly and work as a team to make sure residents receive the best care.”

The service had made improvements and was no longer in breach of regulations. The provider was implementing new governance systems which gave oversight to ensure people were protected from the risk of harm. People’s rights, choices and independence was promoted and care planning information included clear guidance on how to support people to meet their needs.

People's experience of this service

We observed a consistent and experienced staff team who knew people well and had developed positive and trusting relationships with them, creating an environment where kindness and respect were central to the care provided.

We found the service to be welcoming and homely. A relative confirmed this saying, “Coralyn is a comfortable, secure, safe and warm family environment for [person] and we are totally happy with the service and the excellent care they all provide for [person].

For people who were unable to communicate verbally, observations showed staff interacted with them in a compassionate, respective and supportive manner. We observed care and support being delivered in a way that maintained people’s independence, dignity and individuality. A relative said, “{Person] is supported in every way by all the staff at Coralyn. When we visit, we always find [person] to be very happy and content and the other residents also.”

People were involved in their care planning and with the running of the home with their opinions and choices being observed during recent renovations in choosing flooring and colours. Activities were inclusive and organised. A person living at the service told us, “I like living here, I love it. The staff are nice, they help me. We are like a family.”
