Our view of the service

KYN Bickley is a residential care home that provides nursing and personal care and support to older people. The service can accommodate up to 90 people across three separate floors, each with their own adapted facilities. At the time of this inspection, 80 people resided at the care home, most of whom were living with dementia. This was the first assessment since the service was registered with CQC on 25 January 2023. The rating for this service is good.

There had been a change in management team at the care home since the service was first opened open. The new management team were approachable and committed to making improvements to the care and support people received. Although the registered manager had only been in post for a short while, they had already started to make changes and identify where improvements could be made.

The atmosphere in the care home was relaxed and calm. Feedback from people and staff were positive. The facilities and equipment met the needs of people, were clean and well-maintained. Risks within the environment were mitigated.

People’s needs were assessed and reviewed. People were supported by staff who treated them with kindness and respected their dignity. Staff ensured people’s care and support met individual needs and preferences. There was a system in place for responding to concerns or complaints.

People were encouraged to participate in social and individualised activities they enjoyed and to engage with their community. This promoted a sense of belonging and improved people's overall well-being. Enrichment activities were arranged by a dedicated team who invited people, staff, visiting families and local communities to participate and celebrate events, creating enjoyable shared experiences for everyone involved.

The management team embedded a culture of learning. Staff told us they felt supported to carry out their role and were able to raise concerns and suggestions. They were confident their concerns would be heard and acted upon.

Governance systems were in place. However, these systems were not always effective in identifying the shortfalls that we had identified during our visits. For example, people’s care records did not always have consistent or updated details to guide staff on how to manage and monitor risks. Following our visit, the provider started to review and update care records.

People's experience of this service

People were positive about the quality of the care and support provided by the staff. People described the culture within the care home as open, friendly, and welcoming and the staff who worked there, as kind and compassionate.

A person told us, "Staff are caring and friendly they always ready to support me, they are patient and kind", Another person said ,"This place is very fancy with nice decorations but you have to look pass the appearance of the home but I can tell you my quality of care is good just as the standards of the home; it is very good."

People were supported with their nutritional and hydration needs. People had access to the health care services they needed. People were supported to have choice and control of their lives and encouraged to remain independent. People fed back they were involved in their care and that communication from leaders and staff was good.

Some people could not directly tell us about their experiences of living at the care home. We used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received safe care. This approach showed people were included and listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them.
