Person-centred Care

Score: 4

The provider was exceptional at making sure people were at the centre of their care and treatment choices and they decided, in partnership with people, how to respond to any relevant changes in people’s needs.

People were supported by staff to live their lives as they chose. There was a very strong emphasis on listening to people, communicating in their preferred style and supporting them to do what they wanted to do. People were supported by consistent and dedicated staff who understood and embraced person-centred care. This meant people were able to pursue wide ranging activities including regular holidays and outings. Where people needed high levels of staff support to pursue activities this was consistently available.

People’s apartments were designed and decorated in their preferred style. Two people had recently changed apartments, and individualised design features had a very positive impact on their health and wellbeing. People were supported to pursue their own hobbies and interests and expressed their happiness and pride about this to us. For example, 2 people told us how staff had supported them to attend weight loss groups.

Relatives spoke positively about how staff supported people to have very good opportunities. Comments included, “They particularly excel in behaviours that challenge and supporting people to get out into the community” and “They [the service] are a shining example of a care home that is not at all institutionalised.”

Throughout our assessment we observed there was a flexibility in the staff’ and management approach to ensure person-centred care and support was a high priority.
