Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question requires improvement. At this assessment the rating has changed to good. This meant people felt well-supported, cared for and treated with dignity and respect.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. People said staff were caring and kind and spoke positively about the care they received. One person told us, “This is the best place.” A relative we spoke with said, “The staff are like my family now and I know [named person] is safe and well looked after.” During our visit we saw that staff were caring and kind in their interactions with people. For example, when supporting one person who had difficulty in walking to sit in a chair, we saw staff giving kind encouragement and laughing and joking with the person as they helped.

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. People and their relatives were involved in planning and reviewing their care, which helped ensure it reflected their individual choices.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. We saw staff supporting people to make decisions during our visit and respecting the decisions they made. One person said, “I like it here.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. During our visit we saw staff quickly responded to people’s requests for help. One person told us, “You only need to ask for something and they're there.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care. Staff told us they enjoyed working at the service. One member of staff said, “We look after and care for our residents as if they were family.”
