Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last inspection we rated this key question good. At this inspection the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

Throughout our inspection visits we saw people were treated with kindness and respect. Visiting professionals said they were always welcomed into the home.

Relatives were complimentary about staff. One relative commented, “Like a little family. They’re so caring. They treat them respectfully. From the get-go, they made them feel so welcome. I can’t say enough. They are Angels.”

Treating people as individuals

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People’s care and support was tailored to their individual needs. We heard from staff how they enabled people to follow their own routines.

Staff knew people, and their communication methods, well. This enabled them to ensure they supported people in a way that was appropriate for the individual. Relatives spoken with told us staff understood people’s communication well. One relative said, “The staff really understand their needs.” Another relative commented how good staff were at supporting the person to communicate their likes and dislikes.

Independence, choice and control

Improvements were being made to make sure people’s independence and choice was promoted.

Since the new registered manager had been in post, improvements were being made to make sure people had choices and access to activities in line with their preferences. At the time of our inspection visit people did not appear to be engaged in household activities but staff told us they were trying to encourage this. Some relatives commented that they would like to see improvements to activities to enable people to follow their interests.

Staff told us people were having more opportunities to go out and lots of activities and trips out were being planned.

People were able to have visits from friends and family at any time.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

Throughout the inspection visits we saw staff responded well to people’s needs which led to a calm and relaxed atmosphere.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff told us they had been some difficulties at the home but now felt well supported and were very complimentary about the new registered manager and senior team. One member of staff said, “Things are a lot better now. It’s a nicer place to work.”
