Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: We visited the home on 23 and 24 February and continued to view evidence remotely. The service is a care home providing support to older people, younger people and people living with dementia.

People were protected from the risks of abuse and staff were trusted to keep them safe. Staff had received training in how to safeguard people. The environment was generally clean and welcoming. People appeared comfortable in their apartments.

We found that people were supported to receive safe support from a consistent staff team who knew people well and supported them positively. Staff treated people as individuals offering choice. Peoples protected characteristics were considered and staff understood individual preferences and listened to people. We observed staff had positive relationships with people and supported them in a kind and caring manner.

Care plans were person-centred and reflected people’s needs and preferences about how they wanted their care to be delivered. The provider planned and delivered people’s care and treatment with them, including what was important and mattered to them.

Governance structures included regular audit reviews and open communication channels with people, relatives and staff. Managers were accessible and engaged. They promoted a culture of openness and were responsive to feedback.

People's experience of this service

People and relatives were positive about their experience of support within the service. People were actively listened to. People we spoke with expressed they felt safe, well supported and were happy living at Swan care home. One person said, “This place is great. Everyone is really good. Look after us great. Food is lovely. They look after us brilliantly I have no complaints.”

Relatives said, “Feels safe here, so far so good,” and “They are very tight on procedures, do things right which gives me reassurance.”

Our observations reflected what people and relatives told us. People were relaxed in the home, approached staff freely and appeared comfortable making choices about their day. Staff interactions were warm, respectful and centred around what mattered to each person. People were supported to do the things they enjoyed.
