Our view of the service

This was the provider’s first inspection at Coopers Croft since registration, and it took place on 14 October 2025. The inspection was prompted by concerns we had received around the management of safeguarding and other incidents which had occurred in the home. Coopers Croft is a registered care home for up to 66 older people, there were 41 people living at the home at the time of the inspection some of whom were living with dementia.

We found that the appropriate action had not always been taken by the provider and management of the home to ensure people were safe from the risk of abuse. Improvements were needed in the assessment and management of risks to people. Systems in place had failed to identify these concerns. There was a breach of regulation in relation to safeguarding people from the risk of abuse.

The home was purpose built, well maintained and laid out in a homely manner with areas for relaxation and other areas offering activities. People living on the upper floor were living with dementia and although the environment was clean and homely, it could have benefitted from some dementia friendly signage to support people to orientate around their home.

People were supported to have their health care needs met with access to health care professionals when they needed it. Staff worked with other professionals to ensure that people received the care they needed at the times it was required.

People were treated with care and dignity, and their independence was promoted. We observed people moving freely around their home and partaking in activities of their choice.

There were enough suitably trained staff to meet the needs of people living in the home. Although we received mixed feedback from staff in relation to this.

Quality assurances checks were undertaken to ensure the quality of care being delivered met the required standards.

People's experience of this service

Everyone we spoke with told us they enjoyed living at Coopers Croft and that they were treated with dignity and respect. One person told us, “The staff are lovely. They get you everything you want. Nothing is too much trouble for them.” Another person told us, “The staff make me feel wanted. I have a good relationship with them all, even down to the maintenance man. They are all nice. You want for nothing. They make me feel happy. You’d have to go a long way to find somewhere as good as this.” Relatives we spoke to supported, their loved one’s views on the home. One relative told us, “The care my relative gets is excellent.” They went on to tell us, “I sat and watched my relative one day with a member of staff. They didn’t know I had arrived. I just watched them. They were laughing together. It was lovely to see. It made me happy”. People were supported to be involved in the running of the home and free to make choices about how they spent their time. One person told us, “I choose how to spend my day. I go to bed and get up when I want. I chose what to wear. I keep my independence.” While people told us they felt safe living at Coopers Croft we found that the systems to mitigate the risk of abuse and the risk of harm required improvement.
