Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

People’s privacy and dignity was respected by staff at the service while providing personal care whilst they worked in their home.

A relative said, “They’re really kind. They [staff] see her like their own mum.” The same relative was reassured by the kindness they had witnessed towards their family member and said, “I get to relax.”

Staff spoke of the people they supported in a respectful manner, and the need to provide care at a pace that suited people’s needs. A member of staff told us they had to be more patient as people were declining in health.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics.

People were treated as individuals and their care plans reflected this. Staff also knew people well and this was demonstrated in their understanding of people’s personal, cultural, social and religious needs.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People and their relatives confirmed they had control in planning care and staff respected their wishes. For example, people expressed preferences in the gender of carer, and this was clearly documented in the care plan and was respected once care had commenced.

Relatives told us independence was encouraged, and staff did not try to complete a task where people were still able to do so. For example, where people were able to feed themselves staff did not intervene but told us they were on hand to offer support as required.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

People told us staff arrived on time and they did not have to wait to receive care. People and their relatives told us the staff who supported them were engaged in providing good care while in their home. Relatives told us staff knew people and their needs well. People’s needs were regularly monitored in order to respond to changes promptly and to seek support from health professionals. Staff commented they had time to get to know people and read information within their care plan in order to provide good care.

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

Score: 3

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care.

Staff enjoyed working at the service and told us their wellbeing was considered at all times. Staff did not have to travel far to support people which meant they could manage their own personal commitments after work.

Staff told us the workload was manageable, and the registered manager was always very supportive towards them.
