Our view of the service

Dates of assessment: 16 April to 8 May 2026. We visited the service on the 16, 22 and 28 April 2026.This was the first assessment of the service since registration in October 2022.

Listonshiels provides accommodation and personal care for up to 7 people. The service supports autistic people and people with a learning disability, who have highly complex physical, sensory, cognitive and communication needs that require specialist and consistent support. Accommodation is provided in individual apartments with their own garden area. At the time of the assessment the service was supporting 6 people.

We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed autistic people and people with a learning disability respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.

The service provided consistently high-quality, person-centred care tailored to meet people’s individual needs and preferences. People’s transition into the service was exceptionally well planned and delivered, focusing on what worked best for the individual, ensuring consistently safe care and minimising distress. People’s accommodation was adapted to meet their individual needs and preferences and ensured their safety.

Staff were highly skilled, motivated and valued, supported through excellent training, supervision and professional development opportunities. Each person was supported by a dedicated core team of staff who fully understood their individual history and communication methods and knew how to meet their needs and preferences.

There was an exceptional culture of kindness, compassion and respect. Staff had developed warm, trusting relationships with people and consistently treated them with dignity, respect and empathy.

Staff showed an outstanding commitment to promoting independence, choice and control. People were encouraged and empowered to make their own decisions and staff enabled people to do as much as they could for themselves. This led to significant improvements in people’s quality of life.

Staff worked proactively with a wide range of health and social care professionals to ensure coordinated, joined-up care. This partnership approach ensured people received timely, appropriate support and reduced barriers to accessing services.

Leadership was a significant strength. Leaders were inclusive, compassionate and highly capable, with the registered manager and deputy manager visible, approachable and leading by example. Their person-centred leadership style fostered a positive, motivated culture where staff felt valued, empowered and trusted, resulting in positive experiences for people and a confident workforce.
