During a routine inspection

Ashton-under-Lyne Homecare provides two services: a domiciliary care service providing care and support in people's homes, and secondly a supported living service enabling people with learning disabilities to live in their houses.

We found that people were generally satisfied with the domiciliary care service, although a number of people were unhappy that the calls were regularly late. One person said: "The carers are very considerate when they come into our home."

In the supported living homes, not all the people were able to communicate with us. Those who were said they were well looked after. We saw that they had a range of activities designed to suit the individuals.

We found that the service treated everyone with respect and allowed as much independence as possible. We found that care plans were detailed and gave a good picture of each person's needs.

We found that staff were well-trained in safeguarding and knew how to report any suspicions of abuse. We found that incidents reported over the last year had been dealt with effectively.

We found that staff were well supported and well motivated. We found that the management structure allowed close monitoring of both services and that there was a process of continuing improvement.

During a routine inspection

People using the service told us that they were encouraged to be involved in planning their care and had received enough information about the services available and offered by the agency.

We were told that staff were competent in their job roles and carrried out their tasks in a professional way, respecting people's privacy and dignity at the same time. Comments from people included, 'The staff always respect our privacy when they are in our house', 'They (staff) always turn up on time ' they are all decent ' very pleasant and kind. I have had some men staff come and they have been even more considerate, patient and kind' and 'I feel some staff have more experience than others, that is to be expected but they all do their jobs well'.

Staff were receiving regular and appropriate training and were receiving support from their managers through supervision and regular team meetings.
