Our view of the service

Date of assessment: 25 March 2026 and 2 April 2026

Whitefield House is a residential care home accommodating up to 40 people in single ensuite rooms. At the time of the inspection, 40 people were living at the home. Not everyone who used the service received personal care. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) only inspects services where people receive personal care, which includes support with tasks related to personal hygiene and eating.

People’s support needs were assessed with a focus on enabling them to live fulfilled lives through a wide range of inclusive activities that met varying preferences and abilities. Opportunities were also provided for people to access local community groups. People remained at the centre of all decisions about the service and were given opportunities to contribute to shaping and improving their home.

People received their medicines as required; however, there were some shortfalls in the level of detail recorded within administration records. Some basic environmental safety measures were not consistently in place, although these were promptly addressed prior to the second day of the inspection. Overall, systems were in place to help ensure the safety of people living at the service, supported by reflective practice and ongoing improvements.

Staff received a range of training tailored to both the service and the individual needs of the people they supported. However, Mental Capacity Act (MCA) assessments were not always decision specific. These documents were subsequently reviewed and improved to ensure greater clarity and compliance. Staff contributed to reflective processes, which supported continuous learning and development within the service.

People and their families unanimously reported that staff were genuinely caring, kind, and approachable. Staff demonstrated a compassionate approach in their day-to-day interactions, helping people feel valued and supported.

The management team was approachable and fostered an open and honest culture. They ensured that staff understood and consistently conveyed the service’s values, including creating a family feel and delivering person-centred care. A variety of quality assurance systems were in place, providing opportunities for reflection. Management and staff maintained strong working relationships with partner agencies, ensuring people’s needs were met safely and effectively.

People's experience of this service

Without exception, all the people and relatives we spoke with praised staff for their kindness and compassion, which helped to create a welcoming, family feel within the environment. One relative stated, “I have to say the care is impeccable, the staff are really good.” Another relative stated, “To be honest with you, and I do mean this, if I had to go into a home, I would go there myself.”

Staff felt they had the time to spend with people to ensure they could deliver high-quality, person-centred care. One staff member expressed, “I feel we have the time to be person centred so get away from task focused and feels that we get things done in the right way, feels more like a home than a business”.

The team maintained strong working relationships with partner agencies, ensuring people’s needs were met safely and effectively. Health and social care professionals spoke positively about the working relationship they had with the team, describing them as responsive and proactive.
