Independence, choice and control

Score: 0

Staff told us one person liked their bedroom and their clothes to be a particular way. Staff had explained the consequences of this to the person and respected their choices. They told us, “They like their things the way they like them and who are we to stop them, it’s their home”. Staff described to us how they supported people to remain independent. This reflected what people had told us. A staff member told us, “We help but at the same time encourage people to do things for themselves”. Staff explained how they stayed in the room while some people got washed or showered as this offered people reassurance they were around if needed.

We observed people moving around the building as they wished going back to their bedroom when they wanted. One person self propelled their wheelchair with their feet, this worked best for them and gave them independence. We observed another person who was at risk of falling, being prompted to avoid any obstacles. This was effective and the person had remained independent.

People were supported to maintain their independence. A person told us, “Staff want me to do what I can” and “I wash what I can and staff wash what I can’t reach, I wash my face and arms and staff do the bottom half”, “I wash my face and brush my teeth”. People told us they were able to have their bedroom door open or closed as they wished. A person told us they preferred the door open when they were in their bedroom but closed it when they went out of their room. Another person said, “If I want by bedroom door shut I can have it shut”. One person told us staff supported them to lay on their bed in the afternoon as they found this more comfortable, “I still have my independence”. People were happy with the support they received and living at the service. “I like the atmosphere here”, “It’s very pleasant here” and “Staff knock on my door and tell me their name before they open the door”.
