Our view of the service

Aranlaw House Care Home is registered to provide accommodation and personal care for up to 47 people. At the time of the inspection, the service was supporting 45 people, including people with a learning disability and people living with dementia.

The inspection took place between 2 June and 9 June 2025.

This is the first inspection for this newly registered service. We therefore inspected all quality statements under the key questions of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

The service had systems in place to meet people’s needs safely. Partnership working with external agencies contributed to effective care. People’s rights were respected, and we observed people being treated with dignity and respect. People, relatives and visiting health and social care professionals had confidence in the management of the service. A health and social care professional said, “Aranlaw House Care Home is usually one of our ‘go to’ care homes, particularly for people with complex dementia.”

We were assured people were safe. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice.

People's experience of this service

People and their relatives told us they felt safe at Aranlaw House Care Home. Comments included, “It’s alright here, I’ve been here a long time. Staff are nice, other people like it here. I feel safe.” “I have nothing but admiration for the carers that work there. They keep the residents safe, cared for, entertained and well fed.” And, “Aranlaw House Care Home has become a second hometo me, and I look forward to my visits. I enjoy engaging in the activities as much as my relative.”

We expect health and social care providers to guarantee people with a learning disability and autistic people respect equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted. 'Right support, right care, right culture' is the guidance CQC follows to make assessments and judgements about services supporting people with a learning disability and autistic people and providers must have regard to it.

We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us.
