Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: From 16 June 2025 to 01 July 2025.

The service is a residential care home supporting up to 70 people. There were 55 people living at the service at the time of our inspection, some of whom were living with dementia.

This was a responsive inspection following a number of concerns in relation to issues with quality of care.

We identified 2 breaches of the legal regulation in relation to safe care and treatment, and good governance.

Risks for people had not been always assessed such as risks relating to people’s health conditions. There was not always detailed guidance in place to help staff provide the care people needed including for seizures and for people with anxieties. People were placed at increased risk of avoidable harm. Records did not always contain person-centred information to ensure staff provided consistent care. Staff had not always received all training and support required to help them carry out their roles. People’s medicines had not always been managed safely.

The governance systems had not been effectively operated and did not identify the issues we found during this inspection such as with risk assessments and medicines management.

Staff worked with other professionals and external agencies to meet people’s needs including their physical and mental health. People’s mental capacity was assessed and people were supported to make decisions in line with the principles of the Mental Capacity Act (2005). Professionals provided positive feedback about the partnership working at the service.

Staff were recruited safely and there were enough staff deployed to meet people’s needs. The home environment was maintained, although there were some issues with some people’s equipment. Infection prevention and control processes were followed to keep people safe.

People were supported by kind and compassionate staff to maintain their independence. The service received positive feedback about the end-of-life care and support they offered.

People benefited from links with the local community such as with a nursery and people were supported to maintain their faith.

There had been some positive changes to the management of the service which was improving the culture and direction of the service. The provider and registered manager had begun to take action following the inspection to address the feedback given. However, some actions remained, and action that had been taken required embedding.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

During this inspection we spoke with 8 people and 4 relatives. We spoke with the provider and the registered manager, deputy managers as well as care and ancillary staff. We looked at records of people’s care as well as records to support the management of the service. We received feedback from some professionals.

People's experience of this service

People and relatives told us the service was safe. A person said, “Yes, it’s safe. People are friendly.”

Visitors were welcomed into the service and there were in-house activities taking place throughout the day during our inspection. Feedback from people was that they enjoyed the activities on offer. Some people felt there were not enough activities available at the weekends.

People were positive about the staff team. Feedback from people and relatives was that staff were kind, caring and knew people well. A person said, “The staff are helpful, understanding and patient.” Another person said, “Most of the staff are good. If there are any problems I talk to staff.” A relative told us, “Staff care…They are very patient. I am very happy. They treat you well.”

We observed staff supporting people to be as independent as possible with their mobility and responding immediately to people’s needs when they became upset or anxious. We observed people were also supported appropriately at lunch.

People and relatives told us the service was clean and the management were approachable.
