Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 18 August to 3 September 2026. Knightswood Care Home is a residential home providing accommodation and personal care for up to 27 people. At the time of the inspection, 23 people were living at the service.
Care and support was delivered across 2 floors. There were communal gardens around the building, which were accessible for people. The service supports older people including people living with dementia and people with physical health needs.
This service was previously rated as good. We carried out this assessment to confirm whether the rating of good remains accurate. This report does not provide detailed information on areas where we found practice continues to meet a good standard. Instead, our findings focus on any areas where the service needs to improve or where we found exceptional practice.
Whilst everybody told us they were happy with the care provided, we did identify several governance concerns which required improvement. This included gaps in people’s records relating to fluids/oral hygiene, missing information in care plans and mental capacity assessments. Care plan audits carried out were relatively brief and either did not focus on these areas or had not identified them.We received assurances from the registered manager after the inspection, detailing how these had been addressed.
People told us they felt safe living at the home and there were enough staff available to deliver people’s care. The home was clean and tidy and appropriate infection control procedures were used. The premises and equipment were well-maintained.
Assessments were carried out when people first moved into the home to ensure staff could meet people’s needs.
People living at the home and families made positive comments to us about the care provided. Staff were described as being kind and caring and we saw people looked clean and well-presented. People’s independence was promoted throughout our visit.
Person-centred care was provided, although some aspects of peoples’ care plans could be improved. Care was accessible to people and information was available in different formats if they needed it.
People can only be deprived of their liberty to receive care and treatment with appropriate legal authority. In care homes, this can be done through a procedure called the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), which is part of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). We checked whether the service was working within the principles of the MCA and how they managed DoLS within the service. We found that staff and management worked within the principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA).
Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) authorisations were appropriately applied for and overseen.
People's experience of this service
People told us they had a positive experience of living at Knightswood and felt safe, comfortable and well cared for. One person said, “Of course I feel safe. Everyone looks after me well. I have a lock on the outside of my door.” A relative also told us, “The security is very good. They check on her through the night and the staff are always around to help. They make a point of being very friendly.”
People consistently described staff as kind, patient and caring. One person told us, “It is top class, it couldn’t be better. I get lots of attention and the food is out of this world.” A relative added, “I am very pleased with the home. I am more than happy that she is being well looked after.”
We carried out observations of care and saw staff interacting with people in a respectful, compassionate and unhurried way. We also observed people being supported using stand aids and hoists safely and with dignity. One person said, “I always treated with dignity. They close the door when I am being washed.” A relative said “She is always well dressed. They clean her clothes and make sure she has shoes or slippers on. Her hair is cut and it looks tidy.”
