Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect.

People spoke well of the staff saying they treated them well and they felt secure with them. For example, “Yes, I feel respected and they[staff]do respect my home.” One person’s relative said, “The carer is caring and works well. My [name of relative]is happy and he likes them.”

The provider had created systems to regularly monitor people’s care experiences and to promote a person-centred approach of people seeing regular staff at their agreed times.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The provider treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds.

People’s care records contained personalised information about what was important to them. Those small details which make the difference, such as what food they liked staff to make for them, what subjects they wanted staff to chat with them about, and what they didn’t. As one person’s relative told us, “They talk to him about his life and [name of person] asks about the carer’s life, they are always laughing and joking.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.

People had individualised routines which staff said they followed. These people’s care records made it clear the importance of following these routines. As one person said, “I have confidence with them [staff] to move me, they help to walk around to keep my legs moving.” A person’s relative told us, “Staff help him with his exercises to make sure he does them correctly, they massage his legs every morning which helps him to move around better.”

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

The provider listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress.

People and their relatives told us staff responded to their needs. Staff shared handovers and updates with one another and the office staff when changes in need occurred. As one relative said, “Visiting angels were happy and flexible to make to changes and do what they can to manage [name of relatives] needs, they are able to sort things out.”
