Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 20 April to 30 April. Stansfield Hall Care Home is a residential care home registered to support up to 22 older adults. At the time of the assessment there were 13 people living in the home, many of whom had a diagnosis of dementia. This was a targeted assessment, following up on the warning notice issued at the previous assessment for breaches related to governance. At this assessment we still found breaches in relation to governance.
Our assessment included two visits to the home, the first unannounced. We spoke to staff and the new manager who had been employed within the past few weeks.
Important information was missing or incomplete in recruitment files. Care files and medication records also lacked important details needed to guide staff on people’s care and support needs. Audits were not being used to monitor the service and drive improvement . These areas were raised at the last assessment and the provider had not taken the required action to make the improvements. We were told the provider was visiting regularly to oversee the work and speak with staff, however they did still not have sufficient oversight of the daily running of the home.
Work was being done to improve the environment and become compliant with fire regulations. A new medication and treatment room was nearly complete, and all the floors had been replaced.
Staff had started to receive the training needed for their roles and we noted improvements in relation to infection prevention and control.
People's experience of this service
People were well cared for and supported by staff who knew them well. People were offered choices about food and were encouraged to maintain some independence. Relatives were able to visit the home and were made welcome by staff. Families gave positive feedback at a recent meeting and welcomed the changes that the new manager planned to bring in, such as the new electronic care planning system and more activities centered around dementia care.
