Our view of the service
Date of Assessment: 26 February to 23 May 2025.
Jacobs Neurological Centre is a residential service providing support to adults of all ages living with complex neurological conditions, brain and/or spinal injuries. The service can accommodate up to 82 people.
This was the first assessment carried out under our single assessment framework and was unannounced. At our last inspection (report published 22 December 2022) the service was rated Good. At this assessment we found the rating remains the same.
People were supported as individuals. Preferences and choices were respected, and people were involved in assessments, reviews and decisions about their care, as much as they were able and wanted to. This was reflected in care plans and associated records.
Risks to people’s health, wellbeing and safety were identified with actions to be taken to mitigate them clearly documented. Frequent reviews, considering people’s communication, personal and health needs, were completed.
By working with partner agencies, including health and social care professionals, the provider ensured that plans of care remained accurate and up to date and care was provided using a multi-disciplinary approach.
There was an open and transparent culture at the service. The provider had recently reviewed and adapted the quality assurance system in place. Changes made enabled effective oversight of the service, with actions completed where improvements were identified as needed. The management team had a positive approach to feedback and used it as a learning opportunity.
Staff were recruited safely and supported in their roles via training and supervision. They were deployed in sufficient numbers and held a visible presence in the service. We observed staff to be attentive, adapting their approach from person to person. Staff knew people’s care needs, along with their likes, dislikes and preferences and provided individualised care.
People's experience of this service
People and their relatives gave positive feedback about their experiences of the service.
People told us they felt involved in their planning of their care and staff knew their individual preferences. People confirmed they received the care in a way they chose and there was regular support from health and social care professionals.
We observed staff being attentive and responding promptly to people, adapting their approach from person to person to reflect their individual needs.
Some people could not directly tell us about their experience. We used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. This approach showed people were included, listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them.
Everyone we spoke with was confident to speak up if they had a concern and felt they would be listened to.
