Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

People were cared for by staff who were kind and considerate, it was clear that staff knew people well. People’s individual needs were met which included their cultural and religious needs. Some people had lived at the home for a long time and staff knew people very well. We observed staff taking their time with people, listening, observing and providing reassurances when required. One relative told us, ‘’Staff are kind and caring which is so important.‘’ Staff respected peoples’ wishes and gave them privacy when they wanted to spend time alone or did not wish to interact with others.

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

Staff treated people as individuals, and they spoke about the importance of using words like “people we support” when writing information in care plans. Staff spoke about the importance of providing person centred care as some people were unable to communicate so it was important to get to know people and provide care that suited people’s needs and preferences.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

People were encouraged to make choices and decisions. People decided what they wanted to eat and were given choices on what they did on a day-to-day basis. Staff worked with people to plan their days, one person liked to sleep in, and this was respected, staff waited for the person to do their laundry as they liked helping staff with this chore. People were supported to be independent when they wanted. For example, some people were given specialist cutlery and crockery so they could eat independently, whilst other people helped staff to cook and lay the table.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

Score: 3

Staff acted promptly to people’s request for support and were knowledgeable about what was required to alleviate peoples worry when they sought advice or support. We saw staff contact a health care professional promptly when asked and supported another person to fix computer equipment which was important.

The provider cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff and supported staff to provide good care. All staff told us they enjoyed working at the home and they enjoyed working with each other. The registered manager spoke very positively about the staff team.
