Kindness, compassion and dignity
The provider did not consistently promote people’s dignity and person centred experience. Although we observed staff treating people with kindness, there were occasions when staff interactions did not fully uphold people’s dignity.
During one observation of manual handling support, staff were heard talking with each other rather than consistently engaging with the person being supported. We also observed 3 members of staff standing whilst supporting people to eat their meal. This reduced opportunities for meaningful engagement and did not promote a dignified dining experience. We provided feedback to the registered manager who agreed to address these concerns through supervisions and monitoring practice.
However, we also observed that the majority of interactions between staff and people using the service was positive. We saw staff approaching people in a kind and caring manner, using appropriate communication skills to engage people and offer reassurance. Staff respected people’s privacy during personal care by ensuring doors were closed before offering support.
People and relatives consistently described staff as kind and caring. Relatives told us, “They are very kind. Every time I’ve come, I’ve noticed that and they joke with [person] which I think is lovely” and “They always try to make her feel valued by the little things they do that they know [person] likes, like music and cuddly toys.”
