Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The provider generally promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. We observed people being offered choices of food and having access to a variety of activities.

Staff supported people to be independent in their daily lives. For example, where appropriate, people had specialised exercise or gym programmes in place, delivered by staff who were specially trained. Staff shared positive example of improved quality of life and increased independence for people who accessed the gym facilities.

Most family members spoke positively about the activities available to their relatives. Comments included, “[Name] has been joining in with painting and having a coffee, rather than being alone, he can choose things,” and “There is a list of activities, she has her nails done, she has a good relationship with the staff, doing art and things and they encourage her really well. They are very positive people, and they know her very well.”

People were supported to maintain relationships with their family and friends. Family members told us they could visit whenever they wanted to, without restrictions.
