Lawton Rise care specialises in providing accommodation, personal care and nursing care to older people with dementia.

The home had a comprehensive schedule of activities and entertainment which was specifically taylored towards people with dementia. Many of the activities were sensory based enabling people of all abilities to benefit from the experience.

People’s care was planned and delivered in accordance with their individual needs. People’s needs were assessed regularly to ensure that care plans and risk assessments within their care records remained relevant and effective. A relative of a person who used the service said, “We have been involved all the way. There are regular meetings and they (staff) ring if there are any problems”.

At the time of the inspection the home was clean and bright. Domestic staff were evident in all areas of the home. Systems were in place to prevent and control infection.

The provider had systems which ensured only people of good character with appropriate skills, ability and experience were employed. A member of staff told us, “I had to get references and bring my ID (Identification documents) in. It was very thorough”.

The provider had a complaints policy and procedure. Staff knew how to assist people to complain. Complaints were recorded, analysed and responded to.

We spoke with the relatives of nine people using the service and eight members of staff. Relatives told us they were happy with the care being provided. One relative said, “I am very happy with the care here. X is really settled and is looked after very well”. Another relative said, “They’re a great bunch of people with a good team leader”.

During our inspection we saw that where people were unable to make decisions for themselves the provider was acting in accordance with legal requirements.

We saw that staff interacted with people in a positive, caring and timely manner. We observed that care needs were met by staff who had the required knowledge and skills to provide the level of care that people needed.

We saw that people were protected from the risks of abuse because the staff had received the necessary training to identify and report safety concerns.

During the inspection we saw that the provider had an effective system in place to regularly assess and monitor the service which focussed on service improvement.
