Our view of the service
Date of assessment: 13 to 5 March 2026.The Grove Care Centre -Thurnscoe is a care home which provides accommodation for up to 28 people requiring personal care and is based in the village of Thurnscoe. At the time of our inspection there were 26 people using the service.
Staff had been trained in how to safeguard vulnerable adults, and they had a good understanding of their responsibility to protect people from harm. There were enough staff available to keep people safe and to meet their needs in a timely way. Systems were in place to identify and reduce risks to people.
People's needs were assessed before they moved into the home. The support they needed from staff was clearly recorded in their care plans. People's care plans recorded their preferences, likes and dislikes. This supported staff to provide person-centred care.
People received their medicines, as prescribed, from staff who had been trained in medicines management. People told us staff were kind and caring. Staff treated people with kindness, dignity and respect. Staff knew people living at The Grove Care Centre -Thurnscoe very well. People were supported to take part in a range of activities. Activities provided were in line with people’s preferences. Staff received a range of training which supported them to do their jobs effectively. Staff were happy with the training they received. Staff were supported by the management team through supervisions and appraisals.
People were asked for consent before care was provided to them. Where people lacked capacity to make decisions for themselves, their care records showed decisions had been made in their best interests.
People were supported to have maximum choice and control over their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible. The policies and systems in the service support this practice.
The service worked closely with community health professionals to support people with their health needs. People's care records evidenced they received medical attention when they needed it, to promote their health. People were supported to eat a varied diet that met their nutritional requirements. The provider had effective system in place to deal with any complaints. Where people were receiving care at the end of their life, the service worked closely with community health professionals, to ensure people's pain was effectively managed.
The registered manager completed regular audits of the service, to make sure action was taken and lessons learned when things went wrong. Effective systems were in place to support the continuous improvement of the service.
People's experience of this service
People told us they felt safe living at The Grove Care Centre -Thurnscoe. People living at the home, their relatives, and staff were all positive about the registered manager and how the service was run.
People consistently told us they felt safe and were happy living at The Grove Care Centre -Thurnscoe. One person said, “I have no complaints. The staff are perfect and very patient, even on a tricky day.” Another person described the staff as kind and caring, adding, “It’s like a family.” One relative said, “The care is excellent and the staff know everyone, including the relatives by their first names. They make visitors feel very much at home.” Another relative said, “The home does everything really well. Communication is good, it’s well managed and the staff are excellent.”
Staff were helpful, welcoming, friendly, and contributed to a calm atmosphere across the home. Staff were constantly interacting with people, showing attentiveness, patience, and a genuine caring approach.
People told us that staff were very professional and always respected their dignity when undertaking personal care tasks. People told us they felt safe knowing that they [the staff] would do their best to enable them to maintain their independence. We saw there were robust systems in place to manage risks to people. For example, we saw staff had made referrals to the falls team and referrals for equipment to keep people safe. People told us that when staff were supporting them with personal care, they would always ask for their consent before providing the support.
There was a strong and visible person-centred culture. Staff were highly motivated to provide kind care that promoted people’s dignity. Relationships between staff, people using the service, and their carers were warm, supportive, and caring. Staff knew people well, and people’s social and emotional needs clearly informed their care and support. Treating people with dignity, respect, and delivering person-centred care was at the very heart of the service. People told us they were treated with dignity and were supported to set their own goals and outcomes.
Peoples care and support was planned in partnership with them and their relatives. One relative said, “Indeed, we are fully involved. When [family member] came into The Grove Care Centre -Thurnscoe from rehab, they were wheelchair bound. [Family member] is now fully mobile and very independent with their trolley for support. [Family member] improved so much. The family are so pleased.”
