Our view of the service

We carried out an announced assessment at Church Walk Surgery which we visited on the 11 June 2025. Remote searches of the clinical system were undertaken by a GP specialist advisor on 11 June and the dispensary attached to the surgery was inspected on 24 June by a dedicated medicines inspector.

Church Walk Surgery is a GP practice and delivers service to 5815 patients under a contract held with NHS England. The National General Practice Profiles states that ethnic makeup of the practice population is 97.9% white, with the remainder made up of black, Asian, mixed or other. Information published by Office for Health Improvement and Disparities shows that deprivation within the practice population group is in the 8 decile (8 of 10). The lower the decile, the more deprived the practice population is relative to others. This assessment considered the demographics of the people using the service, the context the service was working within and how this impacted service delivery.

This is the first assessment of Church Walk Surgery since a change of provider in 2022. We reviewed all quality statements under the Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-Led key questions.

We rated the overall practice and the key questions of Safe and Well Led as Require Improvement, Effective, Caring and Responsive were rated as Good. Further commentary is provided in the quality statements section of this report.

We identified two breaches of regulation in relation to the Health and Social Care Act (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 Regulation 12 Safe Care and Treatment and Regulation 17 Good Governance and Conditions were placed on the registration.

We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment.

Where relevant, further commentary is provided in the quality statements section of this report.

There was an active Patient Participation Group (PPG) who represented the views of people using the service.

Representatives from the PPG described how managers made positive changes because of feedback, such as implementing a new phlebotomy service at the practice and increasing evening and weekend appointment availability.
