Our view of the service

Medical care services were small proportion of the hospital’s activity. The main service was surgery. Medical care at this hospital included endoscopy and oncology services. The endoscopy service provided upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. The oncology service offered an ambulatory chemotherapy service to patients who attended for treatment on a day case basis and planned inpatient admissions for overnight treatment. Medical oncology patients were admitted to the 6-ensuite bedded Highbury ward for symptom control. The endoscopy department was a day case unit with 7 beds in cubicles. The hospital saw both private patients and NHS funded patients. During our assessment, we spoke with 28 members of staff across all grades and disciplines, 5 patients and reviewed 19 patient records.

We conducted an onsite inspection from the 10 to 11 September 2025. We reviewed the safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led key questions. The overall rating for all key questions was good. The service was previously in breach of legal regulations in relation to person-centred care (Regulation 9) and safe care and treatment (Regulation 12). The service had made improvements and is no longer in breach of regulations. Staff now carry out comprehensive assessments on admission and act in accordance with the requirements of the Mental Capacity Act 2005. The provider now reviews its documentation to ensure it is reflective of current best practice, guidance and legislative requirements.
