Delivering evidence-based care and treatment
The provider planned and delivered people’s care and treatment with them, including what was important and mattered to them. They did this in line with legislation and current evidence-based good practice and standards. Staff are aware of people’s nutritional needs. Kitchen staff have had the appropriate and up to date training. We saw a system in place that ensured that meals are served to the right texture recommended. A colour plating system were in place as well as some special colour coded plates developed by the provider to support safe plating based on each person’s diet and nutritional requirement. Residents commented that they felt confidence in the staff to support them safely with their meals. People had enough to eat and drink to prevent dehydration.
People who required extra support or prompting with fluids were being supported. Records were kept for those on fluid watch.
However, some records showed fluid targets were not being met, we queried this with the provider, and they explained they had additional steps in place to ensure fluids were offered at various times for those residents who were not meeting their targets. They also explained that some were because of deteriorating health conditions and where concerns were identified, these were already escalated to the dietitian and the speech and language therapy team. The provider recognised that some fluid charts may have been inaccurate due to the recent switch to electronic systems. Improvements were underway to ensure appropriate use of the digital tool and identify individuals who required fluid monitoring.
