Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the provider involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.

At our last assessment we rated this key question good. At this assessment the rating has remained good. This meant people were supported and treated with dignity and respect; and involved as partners in their care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The provider always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. One person told us, “They [staff] are very nice and understanding.” Another person said, “They [staff] all look after me well.” We saw staff engaged in conversations with people in a relaxed and natural manner. Staff took time to smile and laugh with people through the day, and talk in a positive manner about things they were interested in.

Staff had received training on equality and diversity, and privacy, and dignity. Staff showed an understanding of equality and diversity. The service was non-discriminatory, and staff told us they would always support people with any needs they had with regards to their disability, race, religion, preferred gender, and faith. They were able to tell us how they maintained people’s privacy and dignity by asking for their permission before entering their room, and by covering them to ensure people were comfortable when providing them with personal care.

Independence, choice and control

The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff gave people as much choice as possible. People’s care records included sections about their cultural and religious backgrounds and relationships that were important to them. For example, about their spiritual needs, sleep time, and particular food. People told us the staff respected these. One person said, “I can get up when I want to.”

Staff supported and enabled people to do as much as they could for themselves. They knew people well and understood what people were able to do independently. People’s care records included sections about their cultural and religious backgrounds and relationships that were important to them. Staff recognised people’s need for stimulation and supported people to follow their interests and take part in activities. Staff told us that activities are carefully planned to promote social interaction, cognitive stimulation, and emotional well-being while ensuring people’s safety and comfort. One person told us, “They [staff] do things in the lounge and it’s all different.”
