People were empowered to make day to day choices and were in control of their care and support. People chose how they wished to spend their time and what kind of activities they wanted to participate. People could welcome their visitors when they wished. Staff respected what people could do for themselves and made adjustments to suit people. People’s independence was respected, where equipment could support further autonomy, staff ensured relevant referrals to healthcare professionals were completed.

Independence, choice and control

People received care and support in a way which suited them. People told us they were supported to make everyday choices. A person said, “It is like my own home, I can choose to do what I want.” We observed people’s friends and families visiting freely and going out together. One relative said, “I visit regularly and at different times of the day, I am always made welcome and couldn’t be happier with the care provided to [person].”

People were able to retain as much independence and autonomy as possible. People were shown different plates of food to support decision making at mealtimes. We observed staff supporting people during lunch time, some people had adapted crockery to retain independence when eating and drinking. The layout and accessibility of the premises and garden with clear signage meant people could walk around as they pleased. People had letterboxes and doorbells so people could retain their privacy, the registered manager told us people referred to their bedrooms as flats. Where people required adaptive equipment to retain independence, this was sought with professional involvement. A person had a specialised wheelchair prescribed for them and was able to go out in the wheelchair comfortably and safely.

People were able to choose between planned or personalised activities to suit them. The provider arranged trips out, for example, to the garden centres or the seafront; people would decide where they wished to go during meetings and by feedback surveys. Some people had a preference to follow personal interests, a staff member gave an example of this and said, “[Person] said they used to go beating. I asked if they wanted magazines, I brought them in and they enjoyed reading them. I brought my springer spaniels in as they are used for beating.” Staff gave examples of how they promoted people’s independence on a day to day basic. One staff member said, “People have frames so they can continue to walk, if people are having a bad day we offer a wheelchair to walk behind them. When people are eating I encourage staff to sit with them, we often eat together so they can copy, keeps the motor skills. Using the phone too, if they want to ring family we will help them and give some privacy to them. It's their home and their lives so we do things as quick as we can for them, if they want that tea. Some can make a tea themselves.”
