Independence, choice and control
The provider promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing.
People had choice and control over how their care and support was provided. A person told us, “I do have a choice with things. I do have to ask for help at times but that is OK. I get to choose my clothes every morning, and it is my choice to stay in my room. I read and watch the television.” A relative said, “They know my relative well enough to leave her for a while after they have suggested that she do something. It gives her time to think. They never force anyone to do things that they don’t want to do.”
People’s care records informed staff to seek people’s consent, offer choice, and support people to do as much as they could and wanted to do for themselves. A staff member said, “When I help people to dress, I ask people what they would like to wear and put the outfit together they want. We are always offering people choice. When we provide care, if people want to have a shower, we encourage people to get involved, so like washing their face and brushing their teeth. I think people like they are helped to do these things. Only a few people have full mobility, so if people want to move, we make sure people can get up and have a walk when they want. People can spend time where they want, and we will take them there. People have choice about their food as well.”
The registered manager regularly reviewed people’s records to make sure these remained up to date and current about people’s choices for their care and support needs.
