People were not able to share their experience with us relating to this quality statement. Staff told us about certain barriers people had to overcome to ensure they had the same experiences as others. People were supported by staff who understood the importance of promoting equality and human rights. Staff supported people to break down social barriers to enable them to have the opportunities that other people have. People were involved in planning their care and feeding back their views and choices.

There was a positive atmosphere within the service. People were not able to share specific feedback about this quality statement but fed back they were happy with the care they received, and they liked the staff supporting them. Relatives told us they were given opportunities to feedback about the care their loved one received, they felt comfortable to raise issues and were well communicated with. A relative said, “I’m happy with what they do”. We have questionnaires, we do have social gatherings where we can chat to the manager and staff. I’ve always felt comfortable enough to ask questions. They do keep us informed. We have good relationships with other parents/next of kin, this is due to the events the provider puts on".

Staff were positive about the management and culture of the service. They told us they felt well supported by the registered manager and their colleagues. A staff member told us they did not feel there were any issues with equity in peoples experience. They did however give examples of where people may face certain barriers, they had to overcome to have the same experiences as other individuals in the wider community. They said, “(Person) has anxiety around what the community will think about them”.

Staff had completed training in equality and diversity which assisted them to support people with protected characteristic needs such as disability, cultural needs or needs relating to their sexuality. Staff understood the importance of promoting equality and human rights. People were supported by staff to become part of their local community which helped them have the same opportunities any person would expect. A newsletter contained information and pictures showing what people had been involved in and what they had been doing to achieve their goals. The newsletter described how people were immersed in their local and the wider community which helped them feel empowered. They had attended various events and followed their own personal interests. People were involved in planning their care and feeding back their views and choices.
