During a routine inspection

We spoke to people who used the service, relatives and staff. We were greeted at the door by a person who lived at the home and they told us they had lived there for a number of years and liked living at Leonora.

Relatives told us that they were involved in their family members care. We saw that relatives participated in caring for their relatives and one family brought in a wheelchair for their relation to enhance their independence. One relative told us the home has a 'friendly atmosphere which is homely and comfortable'.

People told us that the food was good and we spoke with the long standing qualified chef who showed us the home's menu. Relatives said 'the food is superb'.

People and their relatives told us that they felt safe in the service. One relative told us 'my family member is kept safe and all due care is taken'.

The staff had attended their mandatory and specialist training sessions which were up to date. The staff said they would recommend Leonora as the staff worked very hard.

The people who lived in the home, their family, friends and multi-disciplinary agencies made positive comments about the service. The registered manager regularly assessed and monitored the quality of the service provision.

During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with six people who lived in the home. People said they liked living in the home and expressed how pleased they were that it enabled them to practice their faith. One person who had lived in the home for a number of years said the 'staff are very friendly and dedicated to their work, you never hear them moaning. They are very kind and always seem to be one step ahead'. Another person, who had only been at the home for a short time, told us 'the staff are very kind'.

All of the people we spoke with said that if they had any concerns or complaints they would speak with the manager or one of the other senior staff. People were happy in their environment.

When we asked people if they were involved in decisions about their care people said they were and the staff did not do anything without their agreement. We saw they signed their care plan to indicate they agreed to the assessment of care needed.

Records showed that full assessment of need was carried out, resulted in appropriate care plans that were monitored, reviewed and updated. Daily records maintained a record of people's well being.

There was good management of medicines with staff supporting people in a sensitive way when they were unable to take medicines themselves.

People were supported by a staff group that were recruited in line with good practice and met legal obligations.

We saw an effective system for the management of complaints.

During a routine inspection

One person told us 'it's a pleasure to be here' and 'everybody is good to get along with'. Others said they 'like the people, they are Christian' and 'I've taken to the home'. A relative said their parent was 'very happy, it's a lovely home'. People said they liked the food and would speak to the manager if they were unhappy. They told us that their visitors were made to feel welcome.

We saw questionnaires that were sent to visitors to the home. Comments made included 'always a pleasure to visit' and 'I always enjoy the time I spend here'. In addition one person wrote 'residents are happy, looked after and well cared for' and another stated 'I have always felt very welcome by both staff and residents'.

The home was clean and tidy and we noted that the lounge had been decorated recently. We observed staff going about their duties in an unhurried way ensuring they communicated with people as they were assisting them. There was Bible study on the morning of our visit that was led by a volunteer.

We were accompanied on our visit by an expert by experience. An expert by experience has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses a health, mental health and/or social care service. They spent time talking to people and staff and produced evidence for us to use in our review.
