Our view of the service

Date of onsite inspection: 25 and 26 August 2026. Additional information and evidence were reviewed remotely after the onsite visits.

Regents Residential Care home is registered to care for up to 64 people. Accommodation and personal care are provided for older and younger people, people living with dementia, physical disabilities, sensory impairments, learning disabilities and Autistic people. At the time of our visits 53 people were living at the service. There were no people living at the service with a learning disability or Autistic people. Our decision to inspect the service was due to the length of time since our last rated inspection and some concerns with falls management. During the inspection we assessed all quality statements under the key questions of safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led. The service was previously rated good and has now changed to requires improvement. We identified a breach in legal regulation in relation to good governance and oversight. We will ask the provider to submit an action plan detailing how they will ensure improvements are maintained and embedded at the service.

We identified some concerns in relation to the environment, IPC, staff training, medicines documentation, clinical care guidance, modified diets, daily documentation and management and oversight. Managers took prompt action to address these concerns during the inspection process.

People’s needs were assessed prior to admission to the service, and care plans were reviewed regularly with people and relatives. However, some care plans contained contradicting information. We spent time talking with staff, which confirmed they knew people’s preferences, choices and wishes well.

Medicines documentation required further strengthening to ensure medicines were administered as prescribed, particularly for people who required specific regimes prior and after administration.

Accidents and incidents were recorded, investigated and shared with the staff team, and actions were taken to learn from these to reduce the risk of reoccurrence. Documentation was monitored to identify any themes or patterns.

Staff were recruited safely into the service, and the appropriate checks were carried out to ensure staff were of good character before they commenced employment. Staff had received mandatory training; however not all staff had completed training to meet people’s specific clinical needs.

People were supported to maintain their independence and staff ensured their dignity was maintained.

We observed positive and meaningful interactions with people and relatives, who told us they had been involved in care planning and were regularly kept up to date with any changes at the service.

There were systems and processes in place to monitor the quality of care provided, however, some of these required further improvements to ensure the service identified concerns in order to continually drive improvements.

People's experience of this service

We spoke with 11 people, 7 relatives and 2 representatives about their experience of the care provided at Regents Residential Care Home.

We spent time seeing how people were cared for. We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk with us. We also carried out observations of staff interactions with people and the care being delivered, where we saw staff had built trusting relationships and demonstrated a good understanding of people’s needs.

We received mostly positive comments from people and relatives in relation to the care being provided at Regents Residential Care home, although some people told us an additional staff member would be beneficial as they sometimes waited for assistance.

People and relatives told us staff were kind and caring. We saw time was taken to learn about people’s background and what hobbies and interests they had; this had been incorporated into some of the activity planning. People and relatives told us they felt safe and could approach either the staff or managers, if they had any concerns or complaints and these would be listened to.

There were a variety of activities both internally and externally available which people participated in, and the service was well established within the local community.
